I have come across this variation before but never as a samurai version! This reminds me a little bit of a puzzle in a Japanese magazine called "Area Appoint Number Place". Clues are given by way of some cells being divided into 3 or 4 numbered sections. The number would go somewhere in the direction it is facing, between it's section and the next divided cell.
