Ah, that's a shame - both David and I checked they'd been copied from the originals correctly but we must both have missed that column, probably because it was at the end. I'll fix the download PDF. Just to be clear, Nathan's original puzzle he sent was correct - the mistake was when the print-ready graphic was prepared.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Ah, awesome! I've seen these very occasionally as a variant "Skyscrapers with gaps", where instead of a 0 you just leave a blank square - but they work exactly as you describe. I could include these in the Community Puzzles section of the magazine in issue 13 or 14 if you are happy for us to do so? Not all readers check the forums here, so it would get them to a larger audience. I thby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
If you have already downloaded issue 12 of Sudoku Xtra you might like to re-download it in order to obtain the following corrections: a fixed Hitori puzzle on page 7 (the bottom-left puzzle had two solutions due to an unfortunate production error - please see this thread for details) clarified Chess Sum Sudoku instructions on page 43 a different Killer Sudoku variant on page 16 (some readersby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
If you have downloaded issue 12 please re-download it. Changes: 1) Page 7 Hitori fix, as above 2) Replacement Killer Sudoku variant puzzle on page 16 (now is one with no multiples of 3) 3) Added instruction line on Chess Sum Sudoku to make explicit the meaning of the sum boxes If you have a printed copy please email me and I will send you a PDF copy so you can re-print these pages if youby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Thank you very much for pointing out about the Hitori, and I'm very sorry it has two solutions. I can quite understand that you are upset about that - I know I would be too, as a reader. When I assembled issue 12 before Christmas I had run out (as of this issue) of my pre-made Hitori puzzles so I grabbed some from my first book of them I made in 2005 (puzzles 61 and 62 in fact). Glad everyone's happy with issue 12. I'm not planning to increase the gap between magazines to a month and a half every time, but just slightly over a month - so around 11 to 12 issues a year, in other words. The Amazon.com and Lulu versions are now available for those who want a pre-printed copy (see the announcement post or the magazines page)by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
And now it's available!!! A few more details in the announcement post (now updated), but it's a bumper-packed issue of 139 puzzles.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Issue 12 is definitely on its way, I'm glad to say! It's about 2 weeks later than I planned due to a combination of unusual factors - taking a week out to go to the world puzzle championships, then having a new book to complete in just a few weeks, followed by moving house just a couple of days ago. I thought I might get it done last week but in the end I didn't have time, so I'm working on it aby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Sudoku Xtra 12 is now available for download! Subscribers should have already received their download link. If you'd like a pre-printed copy and are in the US then Amazon.com is your best bet (eligible for free super-saver shipping), or elsewhere you may prefer to use Lulu (sign up to their site and you will receive regular money-off discounts you can use).. Subject edit done. I thoroughly recommend this tournament to everyone. You can take part at any time over the weekend.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Thanks David! I've never been before, but it's fun to be representing the whole of the UK in the four-person team, just as Palmer is doing for the US too! I'll be very pleased if I finish in the top half, but we shall see. There may (or quite probably won't be) results on the website as it progresses: http://wpc2010.com/by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Glad you enjoyed the issue! I'm a big fan of loop puzzles myself so it's good to know they go down well.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I've written to the CEO of myHobbyStore asking him to look into your case, and he's now asked the subscription handling company to sort it out and contact you. Can I also ask people to send any personal queries about Sudoku Pro by email or direct to myHobbyStore? This forum is for Sudoku Xtra, not Sudoku Pro (which is an entirely separate entity and not run by me at all).by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I presume you mean 2x2 boxes, and yes those are the easiest bit. Both puzzles are a little tricky - it's actually much easier to make easy puzzles so I was pretty pleased with how these came out since I haven't made many Heyawake before (in fact only four ever I think!). The top one with the 2s is probably harder to get going on - you need to realise that the 2 in the middle of the right-hand sby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I always try to sort the puzzles so the easiest is at the top-left of each page and then it gets harder left-to-right, top-to-bottom (although sometimes if I run out of time I occasionally don't do this on all of the Sudoku variant pages, and one issue I didn't sort the Slitherlinks and I realised later they ended up with the hardest one on the top line) - but I make a real effort for the Communiby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Thanks for all the positive comments! It really helps actually, because it's good to know I'm doing something right! I'm trying to keep mixing up the content a bit each issue, so every issue has at least a few new or different things in it. I was quite pleased with how the Heyawake came out this issue (I pushed toroidal sudoku out of the way for them), and it's been a few issues since I put anyby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I've emailed them yet again - sorry the subscription company they've switched to have let you down. Have you tried phoning the customer services number, 0844 412 2262? Harder for them to ignore you then! They told me they'd contacted the CEO of the subs company previously.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Sudoku Xtra 11 is now available for download as a PDF, as well as pre-printed from Lulu and also from Amazon.com (eligible for free super-saver shipping!), and it's packed with even more puzzles than last issue! The cover features a Boomerang Samurai, made up of 10 overlapping 8x8 puzzles, and then later on there's a double-page spread with a real X factor, the facing Return of the Boomerang 1by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Cathy, Oh, really? Okay, well I've compiled your five postings on this together in chronological order and sent it on to myhobbystore, so I will see what they say now. Can you email me your email confirmation you received, just so I can quote them the right info if they get back in touch? Mail me at gareth@sudokuxtby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Cathy, I've been told the subscription service is now contracted out so they can't help directly - you need to email subscriptions@myhobbystore.com which will redirect to the external company. If after doing that you still don't have any joy then Iby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Sounds rubbish Cathy - I have sent an email and will follow up when I get a reply. Sorry you've had poor service - that must be very annoying and I can only apologise on their behalf.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
The new mag design adds loads more pages permanently - in fact I now know it is 20 more pages (not 16) because the cover is now additional rather than part of the main page count. It's a permanent change, to try and attract a more general readership in too, without losing what makes it special - the mag is now full of Sudoku variants (25 of them, in fact, including many never seen in print outby gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I just checked and 24th September is the listed publication date for issue 55, so you should receive it this week I imagine.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
If you haven't received a magazine you've bought, you should call or email the publishers. They are a long-running company with a range of other magazines, and while I can't personally guarantee it I really don't think they're going anywhere any time soon - I've seen their offices and they have loads of stuff going back many, many years. Is that the 3-4-5 triangle question? If so it's 5. And I agree - these are incredibly good puzzles from Tom. If you want a further challenge, you can solve the islands part of the 12x12 one without using the sudoku clues - just the given island clues and 5-per-region constraints are sufficient! That itself is a truly spectacular puzzle.by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
One thing that I haven't got round to doing for a long time is adding the new single-puzzle books I promised a while back, mainly because I'm perfectionist about my puzzles and I didn't want to do them until I was absolutely sure I had the difficulty ratings just right. However what I have recently completed is a series of variant-size Sudoku, following the success of the first volume of my 16x1by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum

If you got that far it's extremely likely there's only a small mistake somewhere near to where you got stuck - so good luck! Is it okay on A4 paper, that puzzle? I decided it would just about be big enough, but I'm interested in feedback - is including 13-grid puzzles in future a good idea?by gareth - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
