Hi Gareth - thanks for taking the time to type out all those hints for the Heyawake puzzles. Much appreciated although I really don't think Heyawake is going to be my forte! I still haven't managed the cover puzzle and only managed the smaller ones by printing out multiple copies and filling in the zip patterns both possible ways and following them through until I got stuck again. I finally goby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Nikki, well done you on completing the magazine! I am really impressed that you have managed to complete everything. Have you ever thought of going on the Logic Masters India site and doing some of the weekend competitions? Give some of the men a run for their money!! I've done about as much as I can do of Issue 13 now which is about 80% of it as usual! I keep going back to old magazinesby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
It seems this magazine has been rather ill-fated as I received a letter in the post telling me that it is now to be discontinued. What a shame Gareth. In all honesty I never enjoyed it as much as Sudoku Xtra but at least the variety puzzles did used to put me on between issues of Xtra. Its beginning to look as though there is no popular market for many of the newer puzzle types - I've not haby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Not a problem - I've got the pdf to keep me going! I think I must be your best customer!! I buy the pdf version each month, and also a copy from Lulu as well because I love to have a hard copy! I always have some unsolved puzzles at the end of each issue and keep going back to them to have another go! Who knows - they may be a collectors item some day, expecially if there are very few in exisby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Prime numbers or perfect numbers I enjoyed solving this puzzle! Not too diffiicult either as all those 1s and 9s and 3s and 7s made the adding up quite easy!! Gareth, just wondering hether the Lulu copy is due out soon? I do like to have a glossy magazine to solve in!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
QuoteNikki Just a note Christine to say that I really struggled with Krypto Kakuro to start with but as is so often the case once you have cracked the first one or two the rest become easier. JIm is very hepful with his solving advice isn't he! I really admire these people who can write this information in a clear and simple way-I wouldn't know where to start! I agree with you there Nikki.by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Got that, thank you Jim! Good to have a university maths tutor on board! I will know where to come for any help! Maths never came easy to me at school (also in a previous life!!) - I've always been more on the language and literature side, although strangely enough I've no interest in word or crossword puzzles now, and it's only in the past few years that I have become fascinated with number pby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Jim Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I was able to follow your instructions and reasoning without too much difficulty (sometimes I need the obvious pointing out (like the F + B added together can't be more than 7 because of the CE clue) . I filled in all the known numbers onto the grid alongside the letters, so by process of elimination worked out that the D must be 5 and the J musby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Following on from Nikkii's request for help with Tiger in the Woods puzzles, I thought I would add my own request for help with the Krypto Kakuro puzzles. How is everyone getting on with them? These intrigue me, but as yet I have failed to solve a single one. I can get as far as working out which letters represent the 1s and 2s, but after that draw a blank. I've had a quick look at the 'Walkby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Nikki, nothing to add to this topic really except to say I've had a go at Tiger in the Woods too and also drew a blank, but might have another look since Mathimagics has taken the trouble to explain in so much detail! You must be a really great puzzler if that is the only thing in Xtra which has troubled you! I usually manage to complete about three quarters of the puzzles, but there areby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I'm also a fan of Skyscraper puzzles even though I find them quite difficult so it was great to see these as a variation on a theme! Having said that I found that the first 0 - 4 and the first 0 - 5 puzzles were reasonably quick to solve, but that the second of each took quite a bit longer. I'm sure it's one of those puzzles that would get a little easier with practice. As for the SSZX, that wby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I also noticed the mistake when doing this puzzle, but to be quite honest I didn't think it worth mentioning as it was quite possible to solve the puzzle without this clue, and it certainly didn't affect my enjoyment of the puzzle or lead to any confusion.by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi again, Zotmeister. Just wanted to make it clear that I totally respect your opinions even if I don't agree with all of them! Hitori is one of the puzzles I just don't happen to be able to do except at the most basic level so I accept that it would be frustrating to find a puzzle that has two solutions. I do understand the point you are trying to make about the +1 puzzle, just happen to seeby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Zotmeister, I am sure Gareth will respond to your comments, but after reading your post I just couldn't stop myself leaping to the defence of my favourite puzzle magazine! I have bought every issue so far and will continue to do so as long as it is published. I do appreciate that everyone wants accurate puzzles with only one solution, but also accept that occasionally mistakes do occur, andby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
That's great news Nathan - will look forward to those. I've had bit of a labyrinth New Year! I got a a copy of Beyond Sudoku Mag with a few labyrinth puzzles in and a couple of 20 x 20s which were in my husband's Super Hanjie magazine, but as these are both bi-monthly magazines, my supply has dried up, They are great puzzles and nowhere else to be found that I know of, so it's good news to knowby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the labyrinth puzzles again in this edition and to make a plea for them to keep coming! For someone who has never really got to grips with hanjie, I have become addicted to these puzzles and actually find I can do them! So thanks Nathan - hope you have some more to send in!!! Really enjoyed Grant's Wild Labyrinth puzzles too and managed both of tby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Yes, issue 12 looks great as ever! I will definitely be saving the Christmas tree puzzles for the day after Boxing Day when all relatives have been visited and relaxation begins! Glad to see 13X variations becoming a regular feature, and amongst the smaller puzzles I really enjoy the last Killer + Killer Pro of each set where a different set of numbers is given. Thanks for the reply and I hope the house move went smoothly and you are settling in well.. You did talk at one time about making Xtra a bi-monthly magazine and with all the other commitments you have with Sudoku Pro (bring back the yajilin and masyu by the way!) and your books, I wouldn't blame you in the least if you decided to publish Xtra less regularly (even though my personal preference woby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Gareth. It's been very quiet on here recently. I know you must be busy in the run up to Christmas, but was just wondering if there was any more news on when Issue 12 would be out? Something to keep us going if we get completely snowed up!!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Nathan, I have just got to grips with the labyrinth puzzles from issues 10 and 11 and really enjoyed them - a real change from the types of puzzle I normally do. I am becoming a great fan of loop puzzles (well I know this is not quite a loop puzzle, but almost!) Looking forward to the challenge of the 18 x 18 grid puzzle promised for issue 12 (although that might change when I see it)by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Yes I've seen this and downloaded the instruction booklet - there are some great variants in there - most of which I am familiar with! I only wish my moderate solving skills would allow me to compete seriously!!! With a bit of perseverance I can usually manage to complete a respectable number of the puzzles but am nowhere near quick enough to get all that many solved in the time allowed. Finally completed the consecutive 13X! Did it over a few sessions! I thought it worked really well with the diagonals providing extra clues.by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Thanks for the link David! It seems congratulations are in order for the US team - no surprise to see Thomas Snyder at the top there but the rest of the US team in great positions too! Nice to see Gareth with the most points for the UK (so far) and let's see what today brings! I've been following Thomas's blog too (some of it a bit too technical for me) but it makes for interesting reading.by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Will look forward to seeing what you come up with in due course! Just remember to include a couple of not so difficult ones in there whilst we get to grips with them! I used to only ever do sudoku and its variants but am trying to branch out a bit more these days,by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Finally saw the light with this one and have managed to complete it. I am now about half way through the very large one of Tom's which appeared in an earlier issue. I have come to a full stop at the moment but it's surprising what a fresh brain can do sometimes if you come back to it later! Anyway just wanted to say I have enjoyed this puzzle type and would like to request a few more at some tby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Yes, all the best to you Gareth and the rest of the UK team (the same goes to Palmer too although naturally my loyalties lie with the british team!). Don't forget to come back and tell us how it all went and a bit about the puzzles!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Yes, I did mean the 2 x 2 boxes - sorry! Thanks for the tips - it's taken a while but I have managed to complete the first one successfully - only managed to do it by printing it out twice and trying out one of the 2 x 2 combinations on each sheet and following them round to see how they worked out. I eventually reached the point where I knew which one was going to be correct and the second hby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
This is a puzzle I have never tried before but decided to give it a go. I started by taking myself off to the nikoli website and working my way through the tutorial there (I find it much easier to pick up new rules watching a puzzle being solved than by reading a list of instructions). Anyway, I have got as far as being able to solve some of the easy puzzles, but drew a blank with the harder onby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Just had time to download Issue 11 before having to go off on a residential trip with 26 10 and 11 years olds for a few days (am I tired now!!!!) so am just taking my first real look at the magazine and I have to say I agree with everything Sue and Marilyn have said! I love the variety in the magazine and don't mind at all if one or two puzzles have to miss an issue or two to make way for somethby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
What a pain Cathy. If it weren't for copyright regulations etc I would send you all my 16 x 16s because I hate them and the 25 x 25s! They are the only puzzles in Sudoku Pro and Xtra that I don't have a go at so I have some beautiful blank pages in my magazines just waiting to be filled in.
