Bit late for issue 5 but just wondered if I could put in a request for Kuromasu at some point! In an earlier issue Lewis contributed some puzzle 'L's which were obviously based on this and I really enjoyed them - very hard to find more than the odd one on the internet so a few of those would be great some time! Referring to your post in the skyscraper thread I like the idea of some easier yajilby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Troy, I have also had a go at this puzzle and came to the same conclusion as you with regards to the 5s and 6s. I rubbed it out and started again and got to the same point again so either we are both doing something wrong or there is a mistake in the puzzle - maybe Dave could have a look at it? Have you managed any of the smaller skyscraper puzzles in the Xtra magazines? I generally find thby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Shame about the printing errors, Anso - I wonder whether they would do a re-print if you were to contact them? I must admit, I am a bit extravagant and buy a pdf copy of the magazine, but also order a hard copy from Lulu because I like to have the proper factory printed copies too, and so far have had no problems with Lulu - each copy has arrived with just blank pages at the back. I hope you maby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I just wondered if anyone else had given these a go and what do they think? Deceptively tricky I thought - maybe I'm just missing something? At first glance I thought they would be fairly easy but it seemed to take me ages before I had anything other than'O's for odd and 'E's for even in the boxes, but after a bit of perseverance things finally began to fall into place and I've got the first twby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
No!! It's still one of the ones I turn to first even though I find it quite difficult! Any progress on the Skyscraper Xtra?by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Not that it's of any particular interest to anyone but myself, but just needed to say that at long last I have completed a SSSS!!! The one in issue 4 so now it's back to issues 1, 2 and 3 to have another go!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Dave - feedback as promised! I really enjoyed these puzzles - my favourite of your puzzles submitted so far. I found that the ones on the left which were entirely filled with shapes fell into place quite easily - I don't know how anyone else tackles them but I found it easiest to draw a set of the shapes next to each puzzle and then eliminate possibilities for each shape. However, I did finby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Sue - glad you finished the giant calcudoku - I know what you mean about that feeling at the end when it could go wrong! It took me ages as well, but finished it in the end. As for the 15 x 15 Killer, flu or no flu, you did a better job than me - it took me a good three hours to complete, but a great feeling when it's finished! Definitely the sort of puzzle you have to be in a certain type ofby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Sue, sorry to hear about your flu - congratulations on solving the Killer 15. It looks fascinating and I can't wait to get started on it - at the moment I'm just ploughing my way through the 8 grid calcudoku on Gareth's blog site - got three of the grids filled in so far - it's a bit of a marathon but I'm loving it! Gareth - the magazine just gets better and better - all those new variatioby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Dave - just to say I've been to your site again and seen the Shapely Skyscrapers, but am having the same trouble as before - each time I click on the puzzle link my internet explorer doesn't respond and so I am unable to get them. They do sound intriguing though and I'm looking forward to the variants you are promising for issue 4 of Sudoku Xtra particularly as Skyscrapers are my flavour of tby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Thanks for taking the time to clear that up Gareth - I guess you can't argue with Nikoli since they invented the puzzle! I think your theory about Sam Griffith-Jones must be correct. It clearly states in the book:- "The final rule is a little more complex: Rule 4: "Cycles are forbidden. Just a quick query! I've been getting to grips with Nurikabe this month and bought a book full to give me plenty of practice! One thing I noticed was that in this book (The Nurikabe Book by Sam Griffith-Jones) it says that 2x2 blocks of both black and white cells are disallowed. I realised that 2 x 2 blocks of black cells were forbidden, but didn't realise the same was true for white cells. Thby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Once again, a brilliant selection of community puzzles this month, so just wanted to say thank you to all the contributors. They really bring even more variety to the magazine. Fillominos is a puzzle I've seen before but never really had a go at. I enjoyed these as much as the puzzle L you sent in last month 'Lewis' - great fun and has inspired me to seek out some more. Jeff; I can't say I see myself as a Chrissy!!! Chris or Christine are just fine! I appreciate your views! I think I'm just a puzzle addict and spend far too much on books/magazines but when I add up the number of hours I am kept entertained with each publication. I can't think of anything that's better value for money which is how I justify it to myself!!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Great news about the Consecutive and Skyscraper specials - will look forward to those!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Just as a matter of interest Jeff and Gareth, I have all three issues of Sudoku Xtra and decided to have a count of how many puzzles I had done in issues 1 and 2. The answer is about two thirds of each issue. However, I am constantly going back to them and doing another and another so don't feel as though I have wasted part of the issue price. The beauty of buying each issue as it is current iby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Just to say Dave that I too am having problems accessing your puzzles. I've been visiting your site since Gareth first mentioned it in his blog a couple of months ago and have had no trouble reaching the puzzles until the last week or so. The outside sum sudoku puzzle took me several attempts to access, and I've been unable to get the latest puzzles at all. Your home page comes up no problem bby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I've been reading the post on your blog about the 'Special' magazines you are producing and see you've got the 25 x 25 sudoku magazine published. Well done! Not my cup of tea, nor are the 16 x 16 sudokus, but I know you have had many requests for them so good luck with them. You asked for suggestions so could I please put in a plea for a skyscraper special at some point, and/or consecutive sudokby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Jeff - I've come across snowflake sudoku by the name of Hexafex, but sadly not one of my favourites. I'd never seen the tri-doku but have googled them and downloaded a couple to try out. I haven't tried the tre-doku yet either, but will give them a go.by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Dave, it didn't take you long to make those puzzles! I've done them already and they were really good fun. Not too diffiicult but great for those times when you don't want anything too taxing but still make you think a little. I would definitely do some more. Now how about those 9 x 9s?!!! By the way, I've only done one of the Shotgun slitherlinks in Issue 3 so far, and that was great - trby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I have come across this variation before but never as a samurai version! It took a while but got there in the end. It brings to mind another variation - frame sudoku - where the sum of the first three digits of the corresponding rows and columns are placed around the sides of the grid.by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Sue, I agree with your post. Hope you are getting to grips with the nurikabe! It does encourage you doesn't it knowing there is someone else out there doing the same thing and you can chat about it! I found a great tutorial at www.dailysudoku.com/nurikabe which takes you step by step through a puzzle. (sorry, don't know how to create a proper link - can someone tell me?!!) No Sue - you're not alone! I've still got some puzzles outstanding from issues 1 and 2, and it still hasn't stopped me from downloading issue 3 the minute it became available!! And like you, I've had a really good look through it, but won't be abandoning the first two issues yet. I also ordered a hard copy of each because I had so many papers lying around and it is great to keep going back toby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
We've already discussed our favourites, but what about those we get stuck with? With issue 3 about to come out, which puzzles in issues 1 and 2 haven't we all managed yet? For me it's toroidal and inequality sudoku, yajilin and nurikabe. With the first two I think it's a case of not having enough patience at the moment rather than not being able to do them - I have a few numbers in each of tby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Hi Spittledung, hope the house move goes smoothly (probably too much to ask!) and that you return to the forum feeling a little less hassled! Will miss reading your comments but am sure when issue 3 comes out, you will soon catch up with the puzzles! And Gareth - don't let issue 3 get stuck at the bottom of one of those boxes!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Looking forward to issue 3 already! It's great to see a bit of variety each month as well as the firm favourites - looking forward to the above mentioned puzzles. On the spur of the moment, despite the fact I've got the pdf downloads, I decided to order pre-printed copies of the first two issues from Lulu (fed up of seeing huge piles of paper and half completed puzzles on the end of my setteeby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Well done Marilyn on completing that SSSS. I agree that the level of the standard ones has been a bit easier in issue 2, but I still haven't managed to complete the samurai one yet! It's one of those that I keep going back to and managing to keep filling in another number or two, so hopefully, with a bit of perseverance, I will get there in the end!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
And another vote from me too for more of these!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
I thought the community puzzles were a great addition to the magazine. My particular favourite this month was the Puzzle 'L' and I would love to see more of these in future issues if Lewis could be persuaded! I had come across both the Modula puzzles and Navigirds before, having seen the Navigrids in the BBC Mindgames magazine which folded - I find these quite tricky (even the easy ones!) butby Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
Another brilliant puzzle - I am really enjoying these large samurai puzzles Gareth. A good calcudoku is one of my favourites and the addition of the inequality signs gave just enough extra clues to be able to avoid a lot of the large multiplication sums!!by Christine - Sudoku Xtra Discussion Forum
